21 Great Performances In Awful Movies

2. Charlize Theron, The Devil’s Advocate (1997)

Best remembered for Keanu Reeves’ insanely bad performance and perhaps the most exaggerated acting of Al Pacino’s legendary career, ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ isn’t a paragon of fine cinema, to say the least. In the middle of Pacino’s over the top portrayal of the Devil and Reeves’s mutilation of what is supposed to be a Southern accent, there is one incredibly remarkable turn by an almost anonymous actress.

Charlize Theron, who at the time had only appeared in a few other films, plays the role of Mary Ann Lomax, wife of hotshot attorney Reeves, who slowly spirals into insanity and hopelessness. While her co-stars failed to exhibit raw emotion, Theron made her scenes terrifyingly real and emotionally tense.

Even though she didn’t really catch Hollywood’s attention until her Oscar-winning performance in ‘Monster’, Theron’s acting in ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ was the first proof that she’s so much more than just a pretty face.
