Cool 1970s Movies: Network

Network is a very special movie that couldn’t have been made except in the 1970s when you could get such actors like Robert Duvall, William Holden, Ned Beatty, Faye Dunnaway and Peter Finch to star in an adult, totally crazy and insanely smart satire about the institution of television and what it can do to those who make it and those who watch it.

When it came out, it was considered to be more a comedy than anything else, but as years went by and as actual television started to look more and more like the insanity in the movie, it became a satire that hits really close to home and that serves as a warning.

Perhaps the best thing about it is that it does not dilute anything nor simplify it. It is a movie that treats you as an adult. A smart adult.

They just don’t make them like that anymore.
