Forget The Remake: The Original Death Race 2000 Is Just Fun

There is nothing worse than a remake that misses the point completely and gives the original a bad name.

That is exactly what happened with the new Death Race movie with Jason Statham which is less than a pale copy of the original from the 1970s, with David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone in one of his earliest roles.

The original Death Race 2000 is a thinly-veiled satire of the modern world and the infatuation that we have with violence and reality shows (to the extent reality shows were conceivable in the 1970s). When you combine all that with sleazy sets, obligatory topless 1970s girls and Stallone at his corniest, you truly do get a classic for the ages.

Just to give you a taste of what this movie is like – the contestants in the Death Race get points for running over members of the general public, with old people, children and sick people bringing in bonus points.
