‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Is Top Summer Movie of 2014

According to Entertainment Weekly, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is the top-grossing domestic movie of the year.

As of September 1, 2014, the movie has earned $280.5 million in North America and $273.1 million in other countries for a worldwide total of $553.6 million.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is the 14th movie of 2014 to earn over $300 million worldwide and one out of only nine films that have topped $200 million on domestic charts.

Since this summer hasn’t been the most successful for cinema, only seven summer releases have grossed over $200 million.

“With four months left in the year, if 2014 plays out about even with the last two years, then we should see a final domestic tally that’s down by between $200-300 million, or around perhaps a 2-3% decline from last year’s box office,” Mark Hughes writes for Forbes.

“Notice, that number looks much less severe than the 25% figure for the summer, but then again that would also assume the next several months compare positively to the same period in 2013 and 2012.”
