Here’s What Makes Star Wars So Great

Star wars

When Star Wars was first released in 1977, audiences were swept off their feet. Back then, it wasn’t called Episode IV, there were no digital edits that made it look like Han didn’t shoot first, and Darth Vader was the epitome of evil and a force to be reckoned with. Needless to say, it was a massive success that was followed up by two sequels, three (by some standards, less impressive) prequels, a ton of merchandise, books and some excellent video games, which are all responsible for creating a vast and beautiful universe.

It has had countless reruns on every TV station in the world and the DVDs are still being sold today, even after Lucas’ controversial edits have taken place, which made it almost impossible to watch the original trilogy in the way it was watched when it was released. The films introduced some revolutionary features into the movie industry and that’s one of the reasons they are popular even today, among the younger generations.

Here are just some of the reasons we still love Star Wars:

The Aliens
The late 70’s were a completely different era in terms of the capabilities of visual effects. CGI was non-existent, so filmmakers had to make do with what they had. The alien species in the film are displayed rather crudely, wearing simple masks, but they are depicted with a certain ambiance and charm that make them feel very, very authentic. We can hardly imagine how much people were impressed with the first cantina scene of Episode IV, where Luke and Obi-Wan encounter countless alien species for the first time ever (on-screen, anyway).

The Mythology
Star Wars is drenched in countless myths from all over the world. The story of a young boy, an unlikely hero encountering an old wise sage and achieving his goal with the help of friends is a tale that has been around for centuries. Lucas did an incredible job of transplanting this scenario into the Star Wars universe, which he dreamed up with incredible finesse and detail.

The Ships
You have to take your hat off to the film crew for this one. While the maquettes and scale models look obviously plastic and unreal compared to today’s CGI, it was an incredible feat that required unimaginable efforts from the visual effects team. What’s more, the results were absolutely unrivaled for years.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is coming out in less than two weeks now and expectations are high, especially when we remember what made the earlier films so amazing. According to Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, the film is “absolutely wonderful,” and we are certain they will not let us down. It’s going to be tough to live up to or surpass the previous films, so our fingers are crossed that Abrams will be able to wow us like that again. Star Wars lives on!
