‘Maleficent’ Dominates Box Offices

Disney villainess Maleficent has bewitched audiences and topped the box office chart on both sides of the Atlantic.

The fantasy movie, starring Angelina Jolie as the self-styled Mistress of All Evil, took $11 million (£6.8 million) in its opening weekend in the U.K. (30May-01Jun14) after earning $70 million (£43.8 million) in the U.S.

The huge attendance figures dwarfed last weekend’s frontrunner X-Men: Days of Future Past, which has dropped to second place with ticket sales of $5.8 million (£3.6 million).

Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow debuted in third place, with sales of $3.1 million (£1.9 million), and the top five was rounded out by new comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West ($2 million/£1.2 million) and monster movie remake Godzilla ($1.6 million/£1 million).

Maleficent is a fictional character from Walt Disney’s 1959 movie Sleeping Beauty, and all other associated media.

She is the Mistress of All Evil, who, after not being invited to a royal christening, hoaxed the baby Princess Aurora to “prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die” before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday.

The character is Disney’s version of the wicked fairy godmother from the original French fairy tale, loosely based on Carabosse from Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet. She was first voiced by Eleanor Audley in 1959.
