British movie star Peter Mayhew is recovering from double knee replacement surgery in order to make his comeback as legendary Chewbacca in the Star Wars sequel directed by J. J. Abrams.

The star developed an excessive growth condition known as gigantism, the cure for which he had to find in the surgery room this past September. Mayhew planned to return to the movie set upon recovery. Even though he’s not getting any younger, and his condition is deteriorating, he’s determined to continue playing Chewbacca, the likeable character that made him famous in the Sci-Fi movie.

The first hints that the new Star Wars sequel was to be filmed came up when Mayhew, 69, had to cancel his appearance at Texas comic book convention Comicpalooza, because he had to be on the set. The convention was taking place between 23rd and 26th of May. Disney Studios did not, however, reveal who will play the leading stars, but the fans can make some pretty educated guesses, since some may appear again, and some are rumored to have been considering the roles.

Mayhew became famous for the role of Chewbacca in the Star Wars Trilogy and the prequel Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. He was not called to play in the two movies, Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

Apart from Mayhew, few more original Star Wars stars may act in the sequel – Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. The studio was not clear about whether Harrison Ford will make a comeback as Han Solo, and whether Mark Hamill will appear as Luke Skywalker again.

Adam Driver has been given the role of the antagonist in Episode VII, whereas the choice for the lead role will be among Jesse Plemons, John Boyega, Ed Speleers and Matthew James Thomas, as well as Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, Saoirse Ronan and Michael B. Jordan. There have been rumors that the first two made it to the top of the list.

The official release of the latest Star Wars sequel is scheduled for release in December, 2015.
