Mexican screenwriter and noted producer Roberto Orci is now a frontrunner to direct the third sequel of the famous Star Trek franchise.

If he manages to sign on to replace J.J. Abrams, the film will become his directorial debut, according to Deadline.com.

This news came just weeks after Roberto closed his movie screenwriting collaboration with Alex Kurtzman. The two will continue to work together on TV projects.

The movie mogul was among the producers of both 2009’s Star Trek and the 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.

Abrams earlier dropped out of making the third Star Trek film, after he has signed on to helm the reboot of the Star Wars franchise.

More information on the Star Wars camp, the principal cast of Episode 7 has finally been revealed. As well as the Big Three, it includes Adam Driver, Andy Serkis and John Boyega.

Star Wars Episode VII is due for release on December 18, 2015.

It is an American science fiction franchise created by Gene Roddenberry, and is currently under the ownership of CBS and Paramount. Star Trek: The Original Series and its live action TV spin-off shows, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise, as well as the Star Trek film series, make up the main canon, while Star Trek: The Animated Series as well as the expansive library of Star Trek novels and comics are part of the franchise, but are considered non-canon.
