Straight Outta Compton Tells N.W.A. Story Well

“Straight Outta Compton” tells the story of the formation and breakup of one of the most important groups in hip-hop, and maybe modern music in general – N.W.A. (Niggaz With Attitude). Of course, the biggest issues the movie had to overcome was to be able to tell the story clearly and effectively while dealing with a pretty complex story.

And while the movie does focus most on the stories of three group members, Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre, the other members do get their fair share of screen time and, most importantly, the story flows nicely despite following so many main characters around. Perhaps one mistake is that Arabian Prince didn’t get the time he deserved in the flick, considering he was in the original lineup. However, the producers probably figured that MC Ren’s story was a bit more compelling, so they focused on him instead, even though he didn’t join the group until 1988.

Overall, the movie is very well done. It’s dramatic, well-written, full of action, and some of the scenes are very relevant in light of today’s issues with police brutality.
