The Imitation Game: Benedict Cumberbatch And Alan Turing Are Related

Benedict Cumberbatch, famous for playing socially awkward but brilliant individuals, is actually related to famous mathematician Alan Turing whom he portrayed in the Oscar-nominated movie The Imitation Game.

According to the family history website, the two are 17th cousins with family relations dating way back to the 14th century. It turns out that both are related to John Beaufort, the first Earl of Somerset, through Cumberbatch and Turing’s respective paternal lines.

Despite initial skepticism, Turing’s relatives praised Cumberbatch’s performance and said that he was the perfect person for the role. His niece Inagh Payne told Allan Beswick of BBC Radio Manchester that the movie really honored her uncle, while Turing’s nephew Dermont Turing stated in the same interview that he couldn’t have thought of anyone better for the part.

James Turing, a great nephew of the brilliant codebreaker was amazed by the amount of knowledge Cumberbatch has about Alan.
