The Other Woman Dominates Box Office

Cameron Diaz’ new romantic comedy The Other Woman has put Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s reign of three weeks over the North American box office after debuting at the top with $24.7 million (£15.4 million). The movie tells the story of a woman who teams up with her husband’s two mistresses to seek revenge. It made the comic book superhero settle on second place with $16 million (£10 million) in its fourth weekend since the release date.

The film was distributed internationally by 20th Century Fox, a subsidiary of the newly formed 21st Century Fox, after the disbandment of News Corporation.

As of April 27, 2014, it has grossed $20,500,000 in other countries for a global total of $45,200,000.

The movie, however, received negative reviews. On film aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, it has an overall 24% rating, with an average score of 4.2/10, based on reviews from 107 critics.

The site says, “The Other Woman definitely boasts a talented pedigree, but all that skill is never fully brought to bear on a story that settles for cheap laughs instead of reaching its empowering potential.

Another website, Metacritic, reported a 39/100 score, based on reviews from 32 critics.

Heaven Is for Real, a faith-based drama, held on to number three, while Rio 2, the animated film took the fourth place.

Brick Mansion, Paul Walker’s last action movie before his deadly death in November 2013, rounded out the top five.
