Top 20 Craziest Movie Car Chases Ever

Everyone loves a great car chase scene. Okay, maybe not everyone, but certainly everyone who enjoys action movies and thrilling sequences. There is something in the recklessness and the death-defying speed that makes our hearts beat just a bit faster, the palms of our hands just a bit sweatier and our eyelids just a bit wider.

After watching a truly great car chase, you are left feeling as if you were part of it. The making of a car chase is among the most ambitious undertakings in the moviemaking business and it has been that way ever since the first time moviegoers were introduced to a true bona fide car chase in the 1968 movie Bullitt. Since then, car chases have grown in size and scope and we have been treated to some truly intense and invigorating scenes that have made the world of cinema that much wilder.

Let’s take a look at some of the finest and craziest car chases in the history of cinema. Join us for the ride.

1. Bullitt (1968)

The first on our list simply has to be the car chase scene from the movie Bullitt from the year 1968 where we were introduced to a true car chase for the first time (although there had been stunt sequences in movies before it).

There are a number of factors that make this scene the cornerstone of every car chase scene list worth mentioning. First of all, Steve McQueen – the coolest guy that has ever lived – wears a black turtleneck in the scene. Secondly, gorgeous and powerful Ford Mustangs take part in the chase. Last but not least, there is the cinematography and the editing that for the first time put us right in the middle of the action, making us participants and not just viewers. The scene is the main reason Frank P. Kelly got the Oscar for editing that year.

Pure classic.
